Think of equipping youth on how to transform homes in terms of proper hygiene and Sanitation, then you will have driven your point home.  Got Aciku village is one of the villages in Kucwiny Sub-county in Nebbi district that had a lot of challenge in terms of keeping hygiene and sanitation of the place.

The decorations on our latrine, the nice handwashing facility with a soap holder, the plate rack on which we process drinking water using the SODIS method and the overall excellent maintenance of the home started from what seemed to be a simple visit to our school by Water School staff.

Ayibu village is one of the 103 villages in Jangokoro Sub County and was among the worst villages in terms of sanitation before the intervention. There was low latrine coverage with no hand washing facilities, homes were also in a mess which resulted to high number of registered people suffering from WASH-related diseases like diarrhea, stomachache and cholera.

Jumedi west village is a fishing village along the Albert Nile River in West Nile region of Uganda. Most of the people in the area are fishermen and fish mongers as their main economic activity. The Albert Nile River is the main source of water for domestic use like cooking and washing.

I am rich because of what I learnt from Water School Uganda. I can testify of how I suffered due to diseases like diarrhea, cough, malaria, typhoid and headache. This caused me to spend a lot on medical treatment. I no longer have those diseases ever since I received knowledge about Safe water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH).

“I have lived in this community long enough to know that not much attention is given to having a well-constructed pit la-trine with a hand washing facility. I used to have a temporary structure without a door and the roof. As a family we did not consider having a good pit latrine an important issue.” says John Opio.

Research shows that over 90% of the illnesses in a household start in the stomach and these are caused by either poor sanitation or contaminated drinking water. In January 2015, Kiwoko WASH Project in partnership with Water School Uganda through its outreach program reached out to the community of Kito sub-county in Nakaseke district.

Farming is the key economic activity that helps people in rural areas move out of financial crisis. However, there are challenges associated with it such as limited water supply since water  is an essential component. Ms. Nvannungi Esther a resident of Kampoomera village, Masuliita Sub-county, Wakiso district thought of joining farming so that she could get finances to  keep her home running since she was abandoned by her husband, yet she has two children to look after.
